The job was to record and mix an E.P for Auckland band Gundry Blues over a weekend. Two days is not a lot of time to record 5 songs, but these guys are great musicians and know their songs well, so we did not need many retakes! The group drove to Coromandel on friday evening. We spent that night getting to know each other, setting up instruments and then going through all 5 songs.
I like to begin these types of projects by recording all together (as opposed to overdubbing each instrument). It serves to loosen everyone up, I can become familiar with the songs, and we have an energetic performance recorded as a good backup in case all else fails!
Saturday was when all the action happened though. We spent the day going through each song, building them up carefully, beginning with the bass and rhythm guitar, and then adding lead and vocals. And then on Sunday we overdubbed some backing vocals, replaced some guitar parts and mixed down the entire E.P, so that the band could take home a rough mix.
Then over the next few weeks there were a number of mix revisions – minor tweaking – to get it ready for mastering.
The E.P is available for purchase on bandcamp.
