The album was recorded over one week in a temporary studio in New Plymouth. I had travelled down with all of my recording equipment and set up a nice comfortable recording space in the downstairs room of a large house.
We averaged about two songs per day, mixing as we went, building the tracks up starting with bass and rhythm and then adding vocals, guitar, keys percussion etc. We spent a final two days fine tuning the mix, before I brought the tracks back to Coromandel for final tweaks, then sending them to Mike Gibson in Wellington to be mastered.
Manella and the band had thoroughly workshopped the 11 songs over the preceding 6 months. So when we came to record they had them really well worked out. This makes the process so much smoother and streamlined – there’s still plenty of room for experimenting and trying out different sounds and tones, but most of the ideas were already well refined when it came time to record.
It was a super fun project, with a lot of laughs through the process. I like to think the enjoyment shows through in the recording.
